On March 5th and 6th, Crown College had the Academic Lectureship Series. Every semester Crown brings in a speaker who is well learned to discuss their topics of expertise and the integration of their faith in whatever they do. This semester Tite Tiénou, Ph.D. spoke during chapel on Monday and Tuesday chapel about the renewal of Theology in the 21st century.
Dr. Tiénou served as president and dean of the Faculté de Théologie Evangélique de L’Alliance Chrétienne in Albidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and taught for nine years at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY. He was the founding director and professor of the Maranatha Institute in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, in addition to being a pastor in the Central Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Dr. Tiénou’s areas of expertise include missions, theology, and the church in Africa. He resides in the Chicagoland area with his wife, Marie and their four children.
Dr. Tienou earned the Doctor of Philosophy in intercultural studies and the Master of Arts in missiology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. He earned the Maîtrise en Théologie at Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France and the Bachelor of Schience in theology at Nyack College in New York where he graduated cum laude.
He is the Senior Vice President of Education, Dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and Professor of Theological Mission.
March 5th – Dr. Tiénou’s first lecture was on the topic of “Contextualization and the Renewal of Theology”. Simply put, Dr. Tienou showed how theology is key to knowing who we are in relationship with God, what God wants us to strive toward and how to properly understand the Word of God. These simple truths are what can be found in theology, a slightly archaic word that means very little to the average person, not studying to be in full-time ministry.
The second chapel had the title of “Listening before Doing: Christian Mission for the 21st Century”. Dr. Tiénou challenged the student body to take time to understand the places, the culture and the people around you before jumping into an evangelistic role. Getting to know the culture before sharing the Gospel is the best practice.
The Academic Lectureship Series is sponsored in part by the Howard Jones Evangelism Scholarship:
Dr. Jones was a visiting lecturer of evangelism, an Associate Evangelist with the Billy Graham Association, director and feature speaker of the Hour of Freedom. Dr. Jones’ compelling vision was for Christians to see the world “through the tear-filled eyes of a compassionate Christ.”
